I’m someone who will get up at the crack of dawn to photograph a sunrise, or make you stop the car so I can take pictures of fireflies at dusk. I believe in visual storytelling and that the best photos are moment-driven. I’ve always had a camera in my hand, but back when I was in university, I made the jump from a pharmacy career path to photographer. It was the best decision I’ve ever made! That, and working with Cooked Photography, of course. Over the past six years, I’ve grown from an assistant to a lead photographer with a lot of new and exciting adventures on the horizon. My absolute favourite thing about being a photographer is that every day is different. The people, shoots, locations and stories are never the same. I have a passion for both quirky and romantic portraits along with unique storytelling candids but above all, I simply love connecting with the people that I get to work with.
Tell us what your one must-have piece of gear is and why:
Currently my favourite piece of gear is my Fuji xT1. It’s small enough that I take it absolutely everywhere I go and has actually replaced my iPhone as my personal walk around camera. I love it as it forces me to practice and I actually find myself shooting so much more often because of it.
Tell us what your one must-have piece of software is and why:
Fundy Software! I believe in our clients having prints, and as a storytelling photographer, I think the best way is through albums. We used to use tools that took us hours to design albums and the whole process was so time consuming and left us with headaches so we didn’t really push albums. But after being introduced to Fundy Software, we can easily put together an entire album and send it to print in minutes, putting more albums in our clients hands and having fun doing it.
What’s your advice for someone just starting out?
Trust your instincts! Don’t be afraid to try whatever you want. You’re the only one who sees the way you do, and that’s what will make your work unique.
